Kochi National College of Technology was founded in April 1963 as a higher education institution to train practical engineers. The college endeavors to solidly educate young students to meet a variety of challenges and realize their dreams, and many graduates have achieved successful careers in Japan and around the world as creative and practical engineers.
The Advanced Course Department was established in April 2000 to teach more advanced expertise and technologies, producing ever more highly talented engineers.
Department of Integrated Arts and Sciences
In the Department of Integrated Arts and Sciences, students study the relationship between the Earth and society through geography and history, and examine humanity's roots with philosophy, literature and languages with the aim of becoming applied scientists with consideration for the global environment and other people. Students learn about the diverse systems of nature and life through physical chemical and biology, and acquire logical reasoning and methodology through mathematics and information processing.
The department encourages health and fitness through physical education, develops cross-cultural communication skills in foreign languages such as English and German, fosters aesthetic sensibility through art and music, and cultivates the fundamentals to be creative and well-rounded engineers and members of society.
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Manufacturing and production sites, ranging from environmental and energy equipment to digital consumer electronics and new materials, require a sound knowledge of design, production, performance prediction and maintenance of related machinery and equipment.
Basic subjects taught at the Department of Mechanical Engineering cover material strength, dynamics, fluids and energy conversion, and this knowledge is further developed and applied through hands-on experimentation, aiming to cultivate practical engineers to meet the demands of a new era.
Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Science
The Department of Electrical and Information covers a wide range of subjects from electromagnetism, electrical and electronic circuits, electrical measurements and information processing to semiconductor, communications, control systems and energy issues.
Integrated electronic information system manufacturing is also included in the course. In addition, studies receive practical training through creativity seminars in fourth year and graduate research in fifth year, to help foster the next generation of young engineers.
Department of Materials Science and Engineering
Fields covered at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering include chemistry, biology, materials, the environment and quality control, which not only form the basis of all industry but also address environmental, food and energy resource issues currently facing humanity.
These fields also play a major role in the development of information technology, communications and health care, with currently the most promising technologies being "Biotechnology" and "New Materials".
From fourth year, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering is divided into the "Biological Production Engineering Course" and the "Materials Chemistry Course", in which students perform experiments and participate in advanced lectures specialized in their respective fields.
Department of Environmental Civil Engineering And Architecture
Infrastructure such as public facilities, buildings and structures rely on construction technology to provide a livable society in harmony with the natural environment.
The Department of Environmental Civil Engineering And Architecture aims to foster creative and practical engineers, offering a comprehensive education in civil engineering and architecture. The department's civil engineering subjects focus on infrastructure including bridges, roads, rivers and dams, while architectural courses teach space design for buildings and housing.
Advanced Courses
The Advanced Course Department offers a further two years of study for graduate students following five years in the technical college.
The department is divided into three fields of advanced learning in which students study in small groups with close attention to detail, aiming to become world-class engineers in the fields of research and development as well as practical engineering.
The Kochi National College of Technology offers the perfect environment for learning and research.
The library has more than 65,000 books and an information processing center linking the college to the world. It also boasts the largest, campus-based WiFi network nationwide, incorporating all school buildings and dormitories, offering an Internet connection even while moving around, regardless of time and place.
The college facilities also include a dining room and store, club rooms, and dedicated courts for a variety of sports, to ensure a rich student life.
